DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
If you've had a DVT or a PE (pulmonary embolus) we can offer screening tests as to possible blood factor causes. If you have neither but are concerned about your risk, these tests can identify blood related risk factors. The consultation fee is £127.60 for a 30-minute consultation. Low DVT risk is age over 40, obese, minor surgery within 3 days of flying and active inflammation in the lower limb - for these advise keep well hydrated and use gradated pressure flight socks.
Moderate DVT risks include varicose veins, uncontrolled heart failure, heart attack within 6 weeks of flying, on HRT or on the pill, pregnant, have raised blood count, lower limb paralysed or recent injury within 6 weeks - for these may need aspirin as well as gradated socks but doctor should advise.
High DVT risk is previous blood clot, high platelet count, previous stroke, cancer, family history of blood clots, major surgery within last 6 weeks - for these may need to have heparin injections as prescribed by the doctor.
